Abstract:Objective To investigate the correlation of smoking and drinking with metabolic syndrome (MetS) for the staff in a railway company.Methods SPSS 20.0 software was used for statistical analysis. Chi-square test and Chi-square trend test were applied to compare the incidence of MetS and the detected rates of smoking and drinking in different gender and different ages. The influence of smoking and drinking on MetS was analyzied by layeried chi-square test. The significant level was set at 0.05. Results Among the 6703 employees in the railway company, the differences of smoking and drinking in different ages and different gender were statistically significant. The incidence of MetS was increased with aging. MetS incidence was higher in male than in female. Layeried chi-square test show that smoking is a risk factor for MetS, drinking is the risk factor for MetS in the male group that less than 45 years old.Conclusions smoking and drinking is closely related to MetS.
