Abstract Objective To understand the mental health status of the military recruits, so as to provide the basis for recruits screening, prevention of psychological problems and corresponding mental health guidance.Methods Figure Searching Test (FST), Cattell Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire(16PF), Symptom Checklist(SCL-90) and Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory(MMPI) were used to make psychological tests for 1602 ordinary new recruits in 2014.Results (1) The overall scores of FST test presented a skewed distribution, the scores ranged from 4 to 6.99 accounted for 48.8%. (2) Compared with military norm, the scores of sensitivity, vigilance, fantasy, anxiety, tension, cowardice and bold, creative personality factor of 16 PF tests were lower than the norm, while the other factors scores increased (P<0.01). (3) All the factor scores of SCL-90 test were lower than the national norm and recruits norm score in China (P<0.01). (4) Three recruits had potential psychological problems according to the Results of first three tests and opinions of their companies. A total of 46 recruits were screened with psychological problems by MMPI test among 154 recruits, then they had interviews with experts. (5) Two months later, 45 people (one was sent back home) were tested with SCL-90 test for the second time, the scores of all the factors and the total were statistically less than the national norm and Chinese recruits norm (P < 0.01), only one of them the scores of forced, depression and paranoid were more than 3.Conclusion In general, mental health of military recruits in 2014 are fairly good. FST, 16PF and SCL - 90 as an early screening, MMPI as the secondary screening, can comprehensively and systematically reflect the psychological status of recruits.
