Abstract Objective To investigate the factors that influence the physiological and cognitive functions in male new recruits exposed to the plateau.Methods The possible causes of change in physilogical and cognitive functions among military recruits were analyzed using research methods of epidemiological etiology.Results The duration of exposure affected reaction speed and depth perception. Recruits who had been garrisoned for 3 months at an altitude of 4400 m had poor sleep quality than recruits who started garrison. There were more red blood cells counts in recruits of 2 months at an altitude of 4300 m than in their counterpartsat an altitude of 3800 m. There was no significant difference in the anxiety self-assessment rating scale between recruits of different duration of garrison time and altitude.Conclusion The plateau environment may be a risk factor for the change of cognitive functions, polycythaemia and poor sleep quality are confounding factors, while fatigue and mood may also play a role.
