Abstract Objective To investigate the effects of dietary protein in different level on hyperhomocysteinemia by Serine addition. Methods A total of 48 Wistar rats were fed low protein (10C) and high protein (40C) diets with 0.75%L-Methionine and 2.5%Serine for 14 days, and they were killed by decapitation to obtain blood and livers for biochemical analysis. Results The Met-induced high concentration of Hcy in rats was significantly suppressed by supplementation with serine in low and high protein dietary. At the same time, hepatic concentration of SAM decreased by supplementation with serine. The decrease in hepatic serine concentration was recovered by supplementation with serine in low protein dietary. Conclusion The results indicated that serine can completely suppress the hyperhomocysteinemia induced by Met, and Serine also exhibiter stronger inhibitory effect in the low protein dietary than against high protein dietary.
