Abstract Objective To investigate the mental health status of long-term navigation crews in nuclear submarine and to analyze the related influencing factors. Methods A total of 126 crews were investigated by Symptom Check List 90 (SCL-90) and Eysenck Personality Question (EPQ) at sealing stage and after three long-term navigations. Results The scores of factors in SCL-90, except for interpersonal relationships, paranoia and psychopathy, had significant differences compared with the norm of China soldiers. After the long-term navigation, the psychoticism (P) and neuroticism (N) scores of EPQ were obviously higher than those at sealing stage. There were no difference in scores of extraversion and gloss between before and after navigation. Conclusion The psychological health of nuclear submarine crews is at low level because of the special living and operating environment. It is necessary to take some intervention studies to protect the crews' mental health according to the character of nuclear submarine long-term navigation.
