Abstract

Objective To assess the level of vitamin D in breast milk and provide evidence for vitamin D supplementation in the infants. Methods We searched for relevant studies published up to April 2022 from CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, CB-Mdisc, PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane library. After unifying the unit of vitamin D, we calculated the level of vitamin D in breast milk among the participants in different subgroups in China and abroad according to statistical formulas. Results A total of 14 articles were included in this study, including 3 articles performed in China and 11 articles performed in other countries. Our study showed that the levels of vitamin D in breast milk among Chinese healthy mothers with term infants in colostrum, transitional, and mature milk were (0.801±0.342) μg/L, (25.132±30.540) μg/L, and (3.792±0.614) μg/L, respectively. The levels of vitamin D in breast milk among foreign healthy mothers with term infants in colostrum, transitional, and mature milk were (25.191±15.845) μg/L, (1.045±1.740) μg/L, and (0.943±2.034) μg/L, respectively. Conclusion The level of vitamin D in breast milk in China was very different from that in other countries, which was influenced by numerous factors. Studies with larger sample sizes are needed to investigate the level of vitamin D in breast milk and its influencing factors.
