Abstract

Objective To summarize the level of vitamin E in breast milk at different lactation stages in health mothers in China and abroad. Methods Databases of CNKI, Wanfang Data, VIP, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science and Embase were searched for articles assayed vitamin E levels in breast milk that published before April 30, 2021. The quality of studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal checklist. Results Of all publications identified, fifty-three were eligible for final analysis. Forty-six descriptive studies, one case-control study, one non-randomized controlled trials, and five randomized controlled trials were included. Previous studies showed that vitamin E concentrations among Chinese healthy mothers in colostrum, transitional and mature milk were (8.01±4.78) mg α-TE/L, (4.00±2.14) mg α-TE/L, (3.02±1.80) mg α-TE/L, respectively. Vitamin E concentrations in colostrum, transitional milk, and mature milk among foreigner healthy mothers were (13.33±7.50) mg α-TE/L, (4.40±2.50) mg α-TE/L, (3.08+1.90) mg α-TE/L, respectively. Conclusion The level of vitamin E in breast milk decreased during lactation. The vitamin E concentration of colostrum in Asia countries including China is obviously lower than that in Western countries, which may be closely associated with dietary habits, diversity between individuals and other factors. Different definitions of transitional milk collection time could produce different results for vitamin E content in breast milk, and thus latest studies are necessary to be collected for update timely in the future. There was little difference in the content of vitamin E in mature milk between China and foreign countries, but the stability of vitamin E level in breast milk from 12 days to 4-6 months postpartum still need more studies to investigate.
