THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DIETARY FOLATE AND RELATED VITAMINS INTAKE DURING PREGNANCIES AND FOLATE METABOLISM LEVELS IN UMBILICAL CORD BLOOD OF NEONATES

Abstract

Objective To analyze the effects of dietary folate and related vitamins intake during pregnancy on neonates folate metabolism levels. Methods Pregnant women(23 to 29 weeks of gestation)were recruited from maternal and child health care hospital of Beijing and Shandong from the "Mother&Child Nutrition and Health Cohort". A dietary survey was conducted using a 3-day 24-hour dietary recall to calculate the intakes of the dietary folate, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12. After follow-up to delivery, neonatal cord blood was collected and the levels of red blood cell folate, serum folate, and total homocysteine were detected. Results A total of 139 pairs of pregnant women and neonates were included in the study. The median values of neonatal umbilical cord blood erythrocyte folate, serum folate and homocysteine were 925.86 (P25-P75: 854.77-1040.09) ng/ml, 49.60 (P25-P75: 37.57-53.48) nmol/L and 5.32 (P25-P75: 3.67-6.47) μ mol/L, respectively. The maternal dietary folate intake was insufficient, and neonatal umbilical cord blood erythrocyte folate and serum folate levels were lower, while the tHcy levels were higher. However, there is no significant difference (P>0.05). The neonatal umbilical cord blood tHcy level was higher in mother with insufficient dietary vitamin B6 intake, but there was no significant difference [P50 (P25-P 75): 5.38 (3.74-6.62) vs 4.23 (2.75-6.15), P=0.063]. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that the levels of folate in umbilical cord blood erythrocytes, serum folic acid and tHcy were not significantly correlated with the intake of dietary related vitamins during pregnancy (P>0.05). Conclusion The intakes of dietary folate and related vitamins during pregnancy were not significantly correlated with folic acid metabolism levels in neonatal umbilical cord blood, which needs further study.
