Abstract

Depressive disorder, a common mood disorder or affective disorder, has become a major cause of disability, affecting the health status of hundreds of millions of people worldwide. ω-3 Polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 PUFAs) are critical for the development and function of the central nervous system. Previous studies found that ω-3 PUFAs were associated with depression and might be a therapeutical intervention for depression. We mainly outline research progress on anti-depression effects of ω-3 PUFAs, and analyze the possible anti-depression mechanism of ω-3 PUFAs. The specific mechanism of ω-3 PUFAs action on the depressive disorder, especially the gut microbiota-gut-brain axis may be the future research direction.
