Abstract Objective To provide evidences for the formulation of influenza vaccination strategies in troops by evaluating the effect of influenza vaccination in recruits in an army. Methods We vaccinated 292 recruits with influenza vaccine as the experimental group and in the same theater selected 1472 recruits of similar conditions as a control group in October 2014. The investigation was performed during recruits' military training which was started from 70 days after vaccination. Results There was a significant difference in influenza-like febrile illness incidence between experimental group and control group. The protection rate of influenza vaccine for influenza-like febrile illness was 89.1%. The benefit-cost ratio (BCR) of influenza vaccination 70 days after inoculation during recruits' training was 5.44:1.Conclusion Recruits should be vaccinated by influenza vaccine as soon as they arrived in troops, so as to reduce cases of flu-like fever, as well as losses caused by the influenza.
