Influence of Stressful Life-Events on Depression in 1764 Military Men: Social Support as a Mediator and a Moderator |

Abstract Objective To investigate the mediating and moderating role of social support on depression influenced by stressful life events, and to explore the mechanism of social support, stressful life events and depression, so as to provide the evidence for prevention and intervention of depression among military men.Methods Questionnaires that include psychosocial stress survey for groups (PSSG), Life Event Scale, Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS) and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) were used to examine 1764 military men.Results Social support and each dimension showed partial mediating effect on depression influenced by stressful life events, and the mediating effect values of social support, subjective support, Objective support and utilization of support were 0.075, 0.055, 0.043, and 0.033, and accounted for 32.46%, 23.88%, 18.77%, and 14.16% of total effect values, respectively. Moderating role of social support between stressful life events and depression was significant.Conclusion Social support is an important intermediate variable which affects stress and depression, and can be considered as an mediator between stress and depression, which adjust or change the intensity of association between stress and depression.
