Abstract Objective To explore the relationships between hardiness, general self-efficacy,social support and subjective well-being among soldiers who participated in a large-scale military exercise so as to provide evidence for promoting the hardiness and mental health of soldiers who participated in a large-scale military exercise. Methods The Hardiness Scale for Chinese Adults, General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES),Perceived Social Support Scale(PSSS) and Subjective Well-being Schedule (GWB) were used among 320 servicemen during a field military exercise. Statistical package SPSS version 18.0 was used for the analysis. Results A total of 309 valid questionnaires were analyzed. The level of hardiness was significantly different between positive and negative emotions(Z=-3.430,P<=0.001). The level of hardiness of soldiers showed significantly positive correlations with general self-efficacy(r=0.541,P<0.01), perceived social support(r=0.266,P<0.01), life satisfaction(r=0.319,P<0.01) and positive emotions(r=0.342,P<0.01). but was negatively correlated with negative emotions(r=-0.144,P<0.05).Conclusion Hardiness is significantly related to general self-efficacy,social support and subjective well-being. Positive and negative emotions alike have some effects on hardiness.
