Abstract:Objective To investigate the reasons for low radiation intensity of standard UV disinfection lamps in military catering units so as to take effective measures accordingly. Methods After causes associated with voltage, temperature, humidity, quality of ultraviolet lamps were excluded, the ultraviolet radiation intensity of thirty newly-purchased 500 h, 40 W UV lamps, which were used in catering units and medical institutions, was tested using different brands of inductors or electronic lamp holders respectively. Results The ultraviolet radiation intensity of lamps in inductance group was significantly higher than that of the electronic group. The maximum difference of the same lamp on different light holders was 44 μw/cm2. The maximum difference in ultraviolet light irradiation intensity between different brands of lamp holders was 30 μw/cm2in inductance group and was 34 μw/cm2 in the electronic group. The inductance lamp holder of Brand A had the highest degree of irradiation while that of Brand X had the lowest. Conclusion Except for the lamp quality, cleanliness and environmental factors, the lamp holder is an important determinant of irradiation intensity of ultraviolet disinfection lamps. This result provides a technical support for daily sanitary supervision.
