Abstract Objective To evaluate the relationships between the stability of carotid atherosclerotic plaques and clinical symptoms of carotid atherosclerosis using contrast-enhanced ultrasonography. Methods Fifty-six patients with carotid atherosclerotic plaques were examined with contrast-enhanced ultrasonography. The contrast agent visualization of the carotid atherosclerotic plaques was analyzed and compared with their clinical symptoms. Results Twenty-six patients who had suffered from obvious clinical symptoms were entirely visualized. Among the thirty patients who had no apparent clinical symptoms, 17 were sparsely visualized, and there was no visualization in the other 13 patients. Conclusion Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography can observe microcirculation in carotid atherosclerotic plaques in real-time, and assess the stability of carotid atherosclerotic plaques.
